I took a look at their website, and it seems they follow the teachings of Russell but reject everything Rutherford. Sort of like the original "Russelites," trapped in time as far as their beliefs. They are using updated technology, though, so they're not totally Luddites.

Hello Joe. I too had never heard of you before reading this thread, but I was impressed with all the compliments and warm thoughts of you and your wife that others posted.
I was also very pleased and surprised that you and your wife were allowed to leave the Society with your honor and dignity intact. I've never heard of that happening before. Congratulations, Sir! My hat's off to you.
I would very much like to read the document you sent to the Society. Only a person with overpowering courage and conviction could or would do such a thing, and I respect you for it. I will email you my private email address so you can send it to me at your convenience. Thank you so much for offering to do so. That was very generous.
I live in the USA, so it's unlikely that I will ever get the chance to meet you in person, but please accept my best wishes for your continued happiness in your new life in NZ.

Thank you so much for making this available. I believe one reason the Society is so big about not recording particular meetings, especially judicial committee meetings, is to maintain deniability. Their philosophy seems to be "if there's no proof, it didn't happen." -

It was just dumb luck that we have a Catholic college here and the ladies working in the library chose to be helpful and accommodating. Can you imagine the response if some stranger called the WT looking for a copy of an old Golden Age article? -

Doug, I may be able to save you a trip. Saint Anselm College is located here in Manchester, NH, USA. I called the college library this morning, and they have this article available as a PDF scan. They said they were not allowed to send it via email, but that I was welcome to come over and download it to my computer while connected as a guest on their network. They were very pleasant to work with and the download worked without a hitch.
I will check the website you mentioned for your email address. You should have it shortly.

Send money to KH in lieu of flowers.

he wanted her to simply move on with her life.here is how she moved on: she put on her wedding dress, got into her car in the garage and started it.
do you think finding her this way spoke louder than any suicide note?

This is so sad it's beyond words. If she could have gotten the help and support she needed, maybe she could have "moved on" with her life and found someone worthy of her. I guess we never truly know what's going on in a person's mind. It's so hard to tell when someone is nearing the breaking point.
You can't directly blame the Society for this tragedy, but I have no doubt that years and years of being made to feel "you're not doing enough" and "you'll never be good enough" took their toll, and her marital situation was just the final straw. The Society's policy of always demanding more and more because the big J is never satisfied with your efforts is enough to wear anyone down. If a person already feels crushed by the Society's ever heavier load of guilt, it's easy to see how one more blow to their psyche can spell disaster. Unfortunately, this is not a particularly rare occurrence.
I wonder whose idea it was to solicit contributions to the KH in lieu of flowers. What a waste! You know it'll wind up going to the Society in one way or another. I realize flowers die quickly, but their beauty may have been of some comfort to her family, especially if they knew which ones she especially liked.

Just one nit-picking item: The Society prides itself on flawless writing with no typos and no errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc. The letter refers to Apple's Mac operating system as "Apple Max." Tee hee!

Did you skip the meeting to watch the superbowl ?

born and raised in boston, i am a huge sports fan, and of course patriots fan.
so anyone here go to another meeting, makeup some bs excuse, illness, flat out miss the meeting or anything else to watch game if your meeting happened to go from the 9am to the 3pm in january ?.

Actually, I haven't been to a meeting in over 14 years, and will never go to another. Ok, I'll make an exception for a funeral or two, but that's it. Regardless, and thanks to Simon and this site, I'm more informed and up-to-date on current JW goings-on and beliefs du jour than most any of my JW relatives. Not only can they not explain or defend all the New Light™, they are not really up on all the latest changes. They don't even know what they're supposed to be ready to die for. If I happen to mention any of the new stuff, they are immediately suspicious that I might be putting out "apostate lies," when that very thing was in the Watchtower several issues back. Go figure...
Anyway, back to the Super Bowl. I thought this particular one was great. It was exciting right down to the very last minute. I live in NH, so of course I'm a Patriots fan. Go Pats! I thought we had lost, and was disappointed and resigned to accept this when the two minute warning came. Then they pulled it out of the fire! Man, what a turn-around!
Once again, it proves the old maxim that any team can beat any other team on a given day. And that "It ain't over till it's over!" I'd much rather watch my team lose a very close game where the outcome is unknowable till the very end than one where my team totally blows out the other. What's the fun in that?
Both teams in this Super Bowl can be proud of their performance. It could easily have gone either way. And that's what made this Super Bowl so dang exciting.

Have JW relatives disinherited you? (especially Canadian)

3rdgen: I totally agree that it is unloving, unfair, and bigoted to disinherit family members simply because they don't share the same religious beliefs. My point was that it should not be illegal to do so. To let the law step in and say what a person who is of sound mind can and cannot do with their money is a patently bad idea.
That said, older people can be easy targets if they are no longer of sound mind or are so dependent on others that they dare not resist any "suggestion" as to whom they should give or leave their money to. Courts properly can and should review those cases to decide if there has been any undue influence or coercion.
I think the Society is definitely encouraging an alienation of affection of family members by their shunning, almost "no contact," policies. They even discourage minimal contact, such as email.
I do not know this as a fact, but I have good reason to believe that the Society has certain representatives whose job it is to visit older, infirm ones to encourage them to leave their money to the Society instead of to "worldly" relatives who would just use the money for selfish, maybe immoral, purposes. If this could be proven in a particular case, that would be a time for the Court to step in.
I know it's unfair and hurtful for people to be disinherited because of someone's bigoted and self-righteous opinions of their beliefs or non-beliefs. But as long as they are of sound mind and not under undue influence when they make those decisions, I wouldn't want the law to interfere. Would you want the law to tell you who you can or cannot leave your money to?
